The suffix I think doesn't need to be a 2 element directory eclipse/updates.  It can be something like eclipse-update-site.  The 2 elements for geronimo are because they are using a feature of eclipse updates that allows archives to be in different places than the default.  We're following eclipse conventions, and don't need that.  My guess is the geronimo packaging is 2x redundant.
