MySQL 5.0 and BIT datatype

I have an app that ran fine on MySQL 4.1.18, but when we ran a test on
5.0.X, we starting getting errors whenever we tried to write data to the
BIT column of the table.  It's referenced in the archives here:

Has anyone sucessfully resolved this?  I want to avoid maintaining my own
branch of the village code.
