how do I correct keytool error

I ran the keytool utility to create a self signed certificate.  I used the changeit password.  The utility completed successfully.  However when I used the keytool -list command I get the following error:

keytool error: java.io.IOException: Keystore was tampered with, or password was incorrect

Further I get the same error if I try to generate another certificate.  How can I correct this problem?
