[PROPOSAL] AOO logo rebranding...

We're getting very close to a 3.4 launch, and the time has come to move
forward with a logo rebranidng for at least the user portal web site,
http://www.openoffice.org, and possibly the project web site as well,
http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/.

Quite a number of logo variations have been proposed for uses within
OpenOffice, both internal to the program and other uses, page sidebars,
Forum header, etc.

The most recent discussion can be found at the following thread:

http://markmail.org/thread/fvgwlvva5ziib7qg

a conversation started by Rob on March 15.

You will note that one of the outcomes of this discussion was the desire
that a new logo NOT include the word "incubating" in the logo.

What I think we need to focus on now, and get Lazy Consensus on, is a new
logo for the upcoming release, 3.4. Internally, we've already started
calling OpenOffice.org "Apache OpenOffice", and we need to move forward to
complete this re-branding to the public.

I've put 3 "web header" logos in...

http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/

* AOO_orb1_logo_webSite.jpg<http://www.openoffice.org/images/AOO_logos/AOO_orb1_logo_webSite.jpg>
* AOO_orb2_logo_webSite.jpg<http://www.openoffice.org/images/AOO_logos/AOO_orb2_logo_webSite.jpg>
* AOOfeather_logo_webSite.png<http://www.openoffice.org/images/AOO_logos/AOOfeather_logo_webSite.png>

Please respond to this e-mail by selecting your favorite from these 3.

Given the Lazy Consenus "process", discussion will be closed on Tuesday,
April 2, 0900 PDT.
Hopefully, we'll have a clear choice by then.

I would vote for orb1 because it is a very neat and clean design.
I must say that the way that the feather logo presents the word OPEN - the smaller wings leading the eye towards a larger set of wings and then an even larger blue word OPEN - is what I LOVE about that logo.
Definitely a tough choice!
Good designs...and if you do not already have it, beta version of PhotoShop CS6 is a free download until they sell it in May...just for you crafty folks.

Ah, for the web site.  The coin drops.

Yes, definitely orb1 for me too.

So hard to pick.  These are all good choices.  But I think
AOO_orb1_logo_webSite.jpg is the best choice for the website.

(My second choice would have been AOOfeather_logo_webSite.png.  I really
like that as well, but considering the wide range of languages spoken in
the larger user community, a logo that has the extra text slogan would be
less universal.)

Re: [PROPOSAL] AOO logo rebranding...

Posted by Kevin Grignon <ke...@gmail.com>.
Hello All,

Some important points have been made in this thread regarding our the AOO
brand. Some thoughts...

*Re: inclusion of Apache logotype*
Given our new home, I understand that the inclusion of the Apache logo type
is necessary. While additional text in a logotype does add noise and
dilutes the previous logotype recognition, we can minimize the impact,
maintain product name emphasis, by ensuring the OpenOffice type is
predominant in the logotype. Proposal AOO_orb1_logo_webSite.jpg realizes
this goal very well.

Also, to be clear, there are different types of logos, including logo,
logotype and combination. See http://www.logodesignsource.com/types.html for
more information.

*Re: change*
I agree with Juergen, we should be mindful of retaining our current
branding to maintain continuity, provide a familiar predictable brand and
styling, and support migration. Furthermore, the full impact of changing
the logo and logotype would need to be fully scoped. Moving forward, we
should maintain a full inventory of all graphic resources in the product
that would need to be updated in support of future branding enhancements.
Such a living inventory will support proper scoping and sizing of the
effort. Again, proposal AOO_orb1_logo_webSite.jpg realizes this goal very
well as it includes the current logo and logotype.

*Re: stop gap*
I agree with Graham and Juergen, and have state this point myself in an
earlier post. In support of 3.4, I feel that only minimal changes should be
made to the identity. Update to address Apache requirements, but no more.
This reduces churn in the product and websites, reduces effort, maintains
continuity to support the migration and gives us time to properly research,
scope and size future enhancments. 4.0 release presents a great opportunity
to refresh and enhance the brand, and in concert with a strong marketing
push will give us some great material for promotion.

*Re: user feedback*
Graham makes a good point, such design efforts require input and feedback
from our target audience. We need to ensure that our brand and project
identity elicits recognition, communicates our message and ultimately evoke
the desired emotional response. To realize these goals, we need to
understand what is important to our audience, and what success looks like
to them. Moving forward, we should capture our goals, and measure any
proposed design enhancement using the stated goals - including market
testing and feedback.

As for my selection, I vote for
http://www.openoffice.org/images/AOO_logos/AOO_orb1_logo_webSite.jpg.
Rationale captured above.

Regards,
Kevin

If there are new facts that can be brought to bear on the question, or new
arguments of significance that were not heard in the original debate, then
that would interesting. Otherwise I personally am not very eager to expend
energy in rehashing what has already been discussed and decided
previously.

Hey Andrew,

Fair enough, the "violent" comment is definitely a personal POV. However the
value of google analytics in this case has always been arguable. It is a nice
easy thing to pluck out of the ether and having studied the outputs when this
has been brought up in the past I find very little that is useful given the
nature of the product and the nature of our target market. For instance, for
the user to do a search, they need to know about OOo first to be able to put
it into the search engine. Another for instance, if you put in Microsoft
Office with OpenOffice you will see that the result does not reflect the
difference in market share.

I've gone on record on numerous occasions defending the need to retain the
.org especially, if only to lessen the impact of the Openoffice.coms and the
like, the old name at least defined the web address and given that our contact
with our users is almost exclusively via that URL it's retension iseminently
and once we are a TLP I will make the best attempt to have the policy "Apache
Prefix" policy adjusted.

I may be slashing at windmills but we have been told that part of the Apache
way is that "nothing is set in stone"... true, it has also been said "Except
this!" but I'm ever the optimist

While I understand that you were not in favor of it, I believe you are
overstating this a bit.
A quick look at google trends ( link
<http://www.google.com/trends/?q=openoffice.org,open+office,openoffice&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0>
) shows that "Open Office" or "OpenOffice" are used
an order of magnitude more than "openoffice.org". Thus, the removal of
the '.org' is more
of an alignment with our 'effective brand' than it is a violent change.
We have kept the gulls,
we've kept the colors, and we've kept the most recognizable part of the
name (OpenOffice).
The only major change is the addition of 'Apache', which in addition to
being required,
represents the major change in the project in terms of licensing and
community control.

I'm not trying to suggest that in total this is not substantial, I'm
just questioning the 'violent'
part of the comment.

This is incorrect, please provide the results of research that support this
assertion. I have corrected this sort of broad unsupported statement in the
past. Please also provide a relative comparison. Well known in comparison to
what? MS Office? Word Perfect? Lotus or maybe CocaCola.

These are facts borne out by research: I talked to Professional Office
Workers, the Gulls proved to be almost unknown in this target market. In my
limited research the name OpenOffice.org or OpenOffice is the most recognised
brand element even amongst present users. Amongst non users that recognise
the brand, people recognise the name more than the Logo by a factor of about
10 (This could be greater but not possible to gauge an accurate factor because
again of the limited sample)

We have applied the most violent change to the most recognisable branding
element already and that is completely out of our hands so minimal change is
already not possible. Orb 1 is best at the moment, as a long term solution
however, it does not provide the impact or the story that will get the brand
out into the market place.

Anything used now should be seen as a stopgap and no more.

Hi Juergen,

It is hard not to agree that the brand, which here I'll use to mean
'Goodwill', value of the name OpenOffice.org as a real asset. I use the
term goodwill to differentiate from the value of 'name recognition'
alone, in that IMO the name is associated in most minds with positive
concepts.

However, I believe this name recognition can also, for one segment of
the population and specifically the independent development/booster
community, be associated with negatives.

For the user base I believe the associations are with ideals of quality,
professionalism and an idea of 'that thing called the opensource
community..not sure what it is, but it's free' FOSS.

For the booster (thinking here of the non-developer [code/docs]
contributors] and the developer communities it also IMO associates with
other ideas, such as closed, corporate, slow moving - stodgy perhaps.

So, without diverging much more here, I think there is merit in both the
idea of making this strong link from the old project to the new, but I
also think it is important to establish a new Apache based brand.

For the website and the 'official' mark, for now, I would concur that
the AOO_orb1_logo_webSite.jpg, so that's a +1

I would like to continue the idea of a separate, less official but still
managed use of secondary, community marks, also - which I suppose is
best done by starting a new thread..

A clear vote for AOO_orb1_logo_webSite.jpg from me

The minimal required change to add Apache is done nice and it doesn't
change too much. We should be careful with changing too much the overall
branding for now. We should first make clear that our users understand
the relation between Apache and OpenOffice.org. The brand and also the
logo are well known and I think it is important to keep and to protect
the brand by doing minor changes only.

heh...I was just pouring over all this...crazy stuff for Mz K's brain to
take in! I'm fairly good at "pattern recognition" but sometimes
assumptions blow up in my face! I was just going to ask you about this
very thing...OK, I will do this in just a bit after I check image sizing
etc.

Thanks...and maybe an expanded user guide on the intricacies of how the
site is REALLY set up would be helpful. :/ In your copious free time, of
course. :)

Change this file: ooo/ooo-site/trunk/content/brand.mdtext

home: home
search: search
name: Apache OpenOffice (incubating)
tagline: (incubating) | The Free and Open Productivity Suite
logo: ooo-logo.png
domain: www.openoffice.org
divid: bannera

The logo parameter understands /images/ in the URL.

So, change: "ooo-logo.png" to "AOO_logos/AOO_orb1_logo_webSite.jpg"

It is possible that small adjustments will be needed to content/css/ooo.css.

Dave
