FOSDEM 2019 devroom

Hi,

I wonder if we'd like to propose a devroom about Apache NetBeans on FOSDEM
2019.

For more information on the devrooms, please see:
https://submission.fosdem.org/devroom.php

We would need:
-be positive we would have 8 hours of content (or 4, if we would ask just
for a half-day). I myself might be able to talk about Java stuff, and I am
sure others have some interesting stuff to talk about too.
-send a proposal (see below)
-have some volunteers to take care about the room and camera (please see
the link above for more info).
-have a primary (submitter) and secondary contact.

So, any opinion on this? The deadline for the proposal is 20 September.

So far, I made this crude sketch for the proposal:
----
Title of devroom:
-----------------

Apache NetBeans

Elaborate description of proposed devroom (including possible topics):
----------------------------------------------------------------------

In this room, we will discuss the current state and the future of Apache
NetBeans, and related topics. Possible topics include:
-new Java features and their support in Apache NetBeans
...

Why does it fit FOSDEM?
-----------------------

Apache NetBeans is an open source IDE, and its this dev room would be an
opportunity for the developers to meet, discuss the current state and
future, and also help other to understand the state of the project.

Relevant URLs:
--------------
https://netbeans.apache.org/

Special requirements:
---------------------

If possible, please don't schedule concurrently with major Java-related
events.
---

If we would like to submit this proposal, I'll put this into a wiki, so
that we can all edit that.

Thanks,
    Jan

Re: FOSDEM 2019 devroom

Posted by Geertjan Wielenga <ge...@googlemail.com.INVALID>.
I submitted (hope I did it correctly, because no indication of success or
failure after clicking Submit):

Title of devroom: Free Tools and Editors

*Elaborate description of proposed devroom (including possible topics):*
In this room, we will discuss the current state and the future of tools and
editors, while demonstrating and discussing how to hack them, how to
contribute to them, and how to help in improving them. Possible topics
include a look under the hood of tools in such as DukeScript (dukescript.com),
Gluon (gluonhq.com) and Vaadin (vaadin.com), tools for working with Graal (
graalvm.org), as well as editors for PHP, JavaScript, and other languages,
such as Apache NetBeans and IntelliJ IDEA.

*Why does it fit FOSDEM?*
The tools and editors, focused on a variety of technologies, though
overlapping in a variety of ways, deserve a room of their own, where tools
engineers and editor engineers can discuss their common and overlapping
requirements, enabling the fostering of a community in support of languages
and technologies throughout multiple ecosystems. This dev room can be an
opportunity for the developers in this domain to meet, discuss the current
state of their projects, and their roadmaps, while also helping others to
understand the state of these interrelated projects.

Re: FOSDEM 2019 devroom

Just one point from the web site:

"To this end, we have set up developer rooms (devrooms) with
network/internet connectivity and projectors where teams can meet and
showcase their projects. Devrooms are a place for teams to discuss, hack
and publicly present latest directions, lightning talks, news and
discussions. We believe developers can benefit a lot from these meetings."

I doubt, one team will be able to present/hack every IDE, so
specialisation in this area should be okay.

But I agree with Jan, there shouldn't only basic concepts shown, but
also in-depth hacking (as mentioned in the statement above) - the really
interesting parts.  ;-)

Just my opnion.

Kind regards

Peter

Geertjan,

Please note that last year (and many years before), there was a "Free Java"
devroom:
https://archive.fosdem.org/2018/schedule/track/free_java/

So I would bind this proposal too closely to Java, as there may already be
proposal(s) for something similar.

Anyway, I guess we could try to generalize the proposal, to be e.g. IDE and
RCP platforms; the topics could be things like "refactoring", "editors",
"building applications (on RCP platforms)", etc.

If the proposal would ask for only half-day, would that increase chances to
be accepted?

(FWIW, in 2018, I see "MySQL and Friends" and "PostgreSQL", but not
"relational databases", although I agree those sound like bigger/more
generally interesting topics.)

Thanks for the comments,
    Jan

Sure, makes sense, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if this ends up being
the stumbling block.

Maybe the dev room could be called "On Top Of Java" or "Beyond Basic Java"
or "Java in the Wild" -- and sure, anything built on top of anything else
in the Java ecosystem would be welcome too.

I'm well aware of that, and I don't doubt we could fill all
sessions...but it's not me you have to win over :-). The vast majority
of devrooms are always related to broader topics. There isn't a Jenkins
room, it's a "CI devroom", no "cloudstack" room (containers/cloud etc),
there's no mySQL-only or mariadb room, it's "relational databases" and
so on. The FOSDEM team values broader yet cohesive topics that allow for
"competition of minds", and I think it could very well be considered too
narrow to just have a devroom about one specific ecosystem.

So to reiterate, I'm personally fully supportive, but I think the
chances of getting a devroom would be substantially greater if the topic
is a bit more encompassing. Just my €0.02 :)

With regards,
Daniel.

Note that it's not about Apache NetBeans as an IDE only, at all. It's about
Apache NetBeans as a development platform, e.g., take a look at these:

I'm +1 on the idea, but I don't think the proposal would be readily
accepted, as it's specific to only NetBeans. Generally, FOSDEM is
looking for broader topics or genres, so perhaps an IDE devroom would
stand a better chance? You could still, of course, have NetBeans
content, but due to shortage on space (which there really is these
days), the odds of getting a dev room for just one program is slim, so
I'd pool it with other IDE topics to make it more feasible.

With regards,
Daniel.
