JDBC Realm - in Apache?

I'm using Tomcat 3.2.3 and I successfully set it up to
do a form login authenticating with a JDBC realm. The
only problem was this did not work when I had Tomcat
hooked up to Apache (via
ApacheModuleJServ.dll/ajpv12). With Tomcat
standalone, its working fine.

Is there a way to have the Tomcat JDBC Realm
authentication occur while hooked up with Apache?
Alternately, does Apache have a somewhat similar
mechanism (not very familiar with Apache yet)?

TIA
