Proposal: incubator-corinthia/test_documents

It is often convenient to have a simple sample document to test things on
manually.

Instead of everyone knitting their own, I would like to propose keeping a
small collection in (say)
incubator-corinthia/test-documents.

{ If you have one (or more!) that you made earlier and that works well for
you, please donate it.}

I'd prefer such a collection in the source tree, because that way it's
always there when people need it, and if problems crop up everyone has the
same set of tools to reproduce, also, that way improvements propagate
trivially, without extra effort.

Alternatively, we could keep a separate repository of such documents.

What do you think?

This is a good example with a complete set of features: http://calibre-ebook.com/downloads/demos/demo.docx

samples is a good name too! If we will intent to use the documents in our tests, probably assets is more consistent.

The docx support in Apache OpenOffice (speaking as PMC in that project) is
at best not reliable. It works most of
the time, but I would never use it for a reference document.

Thanks Franz and Jan,

the tip on saving as docx in Apache Office is very useful, and once I get
my computer out of storage, I'll also install MS on there. For now, I have
a 32 bit lappie with 2GB of RAM, so I'm in the race on a veritable Lada.

Maybe it should just be one sample document per format?

Say:

1) Headers (or sections in LaTeX, which I think it s better term),
2) bold,italic,underline
3) lists
4) fonts: courier, Times, or equivs
5) comment
6) table
7) pictures: jpeg, png
8) header, footer (as in LaTeX, stuff that is printed on every page)
9) footnote
10) html link
11) page number.

If anyone needs a more limited selection, they can just delete or uncomment
the stuff they don't need. And if someone later on feel frisky and wants to
put some bling on the Yak, they can code a sample generator :-D

Regards the samples in the asset directory that sounds like a good idea,
but I think if we call it 'samples' it's more obvious than 'assets' and we
can save on the 'samples_ ' prefix, which saves on typing (and reading).

So, samples/code, samples/documents would be my suggestion.

You can generate odf, and save as docx as well.

Regarding to samples directory, so far we have sample_code, sample_documents and assets in dfwebserver. So, I propose to have assets on top of the repository and code and documents under. I can move dfwebsever assets folder to /assets/documents folder

assets/code
assets/documents

I have a couple of comments regarding to the sample documents:

* simple1.html and list.html have the same content

* I suggest to refactory h1-6_center_p.html like
<p>This is a paragraph with five sentences:
<span> this sentence is plain. </span> <!-- I don’t know if editor will split up the plain PCDATA in span tags -->
    <b> This sentence is bold.</b>
    <u> This sentence is underlined.</u>
    <i>This sentence is slanted.</i>
<b><i>This sentence is bold and slanted.</b></i>
</p>

you are a asf committer so you can apply for a microsoft msdn license for
free, that gives you access to pretty much all microsoft tools.

Catching up on the list after having my attention elsewhere for a couple of weeks.

 1. You can make .docx files quite easily using the free Microsoft Office Web Apps.
You need to create a OneDrive account on the Web. You should be able to use
Your browser to make documents and then download them to your desktop.
    Start at <https://onedrive.live.com/>.

 2. I have a proposal brewing for systematic creation of test documents for ODF
Format. I will add to the sketch that Gabriela started on the wiki.
Note that part of the scope for Corinthia was a systematic set of tests for
calibration of feature support and their interoperability. So this may
involve significantly more test documents. If that is a problem with our
repository, we need to deal with this question rather quickly.

Hi,

after some long thought I figured that for now, as a discussion
starter, I put in a simple tree with 3 simple html samples.

My instinct says that every directory should hold the same sample
files, so that whatever is in odf should produce the same as what is
in html.

I didn't fill the other directories since I wanted to settle that first.

Also, please let me know if you would prefer better directory names,
and if the INDEX file in this form is useful.

As Peter said, we don't really want a proliferation of sample files,
so, we better be sure that what we have is to the point. 3 files
seems like a good size per sample directory.

I only know latex and html, so take a look and let me know if those
three files and their contents are useful enough to be reproduced in
docx and odf.

I have access to odf, but not to docx generators.

Whilst this looks a bit trivial, this directory will probably be the
first experiments that new users try, so it's important that this all
looks good, whilst being small enough not to overwhelm.

I prefer it in the source tree but a to level directory.

I agree with peter if this explodes, then we need to reconsider.

Just an idea, how about having a .txt file with the same, explaining the
purpose of the
document.

Agreed, though I propose we keep this to a relatively small number of documents. There is of course all the 1200 or so test cases which are useful for automated tests, but due to their plain text-based storage format are not so useful for testing as complete documents. So we could create a few which use multiple features (tables, images, references, headings etc.).
