I have used Cocoon, http://xml.apache.org/cocoon, the generate content 
for RSS and WebPagePortlets.  Many of the demo portlets get content from 
a remote web server.  In some cases those server are running Tomcat.

You asked a very general question.  Although I am not sure what you are 
looking for, "yes" seemed to short of an answer :)
