no debugging symbols found

How do I compile apache to enable debug info with gdb. At the moment when I 
run it I just get lots of messages saying:

(no debugging symbols found)...(no debugging symbols found)...(no debugging 
symbols found)..

I tried --enable-debug but it wasn't a valid flag.

Any help appreciated.
