   @rcjverhoef Are you still interested in reviving this? #14439 is still open and people keep hitting it (most recently with GCS), so this fix is very much needed. If you don't have bandwidth, I'm happy to take it over and drive it to completion — just let me know either way.
   
   @patricklucas's offer to raise a reviewer request on dev@ once this is reopened still stands, I believe — that should help avoid a second stale-out.
