Newbie Reference Material

I've finally convinced my office that we need to move away from VSS to
a stronger source control application and it looks like SVN is the
weapon of choice. Can anyone recommend any good books, articles or
even blogs that might help me get started? I'm looking for essential
introductory material as well as material that might focus on
transitioning from VSS, if such a thing exists.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Look for the thread in the archives titled "Subversion for VSS users",
dated June 8. I was also pointed to the TortoiseSVN documentation, which
also covers Subversion use and administration.

This is a good one, as is William Nagel's /Subversion Version Control/
[1]. I have both; once you've read one, the other has a lot of
redundant material, but it's a somewhat different perspective. If I
was only going to pick one, I think I'd probably go with William's.

For the record, since I'm not certain my reply actually got to the list, I
recommended _Pragmatic Version Control Using Subversion_ by Mike Mason;
published by Pragmatic Programmers, LLC.

Good luck Rob on the transition. Erik

Thanks to everyone for the great feedback so far. I had found the online
book in an earlier search and am slowing making my way through that and I've
also tagged the book you mentioned, Erik, for purchase as well as another
that looks promising.

Please keep suggestions coming. The more I learn the smoother this
transition will go. And thanks again.

There is an O'Reilly book, but it's basically the same book printed out from
a year or two ago. It's badly out of date, but handy for walking people
through the basics if they insist on having the manual. If you need
something up-to-date and in print, print out the nightly snapshot from the
web page and put it in a binder, seriously.
