[jira] [Commented] (INFRA-10542) Puppet created cron jobs are flooding with email

    [ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-10542?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=15172221#comment-15172221 ]

Geoffrey Corey commented on INFRA-10542:
----------------------------------------

Seems the purge_kernel script is emailing the output of dpkg commands. I've pushed out a patch that sets MAILTO to null so it should no longer email those out. Assuming there is any sort of kernel update this week, on Sunday when it runs, it should be *much*quieter.

> Cron jobs from puppet are spewing mail, and ENOCARE.
> Email is also a poor mechanism to let us know that something is wrong, esp when it is something that sends a dozen emails every night, if we need monitoring/alerting, lets do that in something that we will actually pay attention to rather than something we ignore.
> In example, look for this subject for messages:
> Cron <ro...@mysql1-us-mid> /root/purge_old_kernels -y
