However it turns out that this is legit, and described on page 71: "In this case, the region segment is acting as a refinement of part of the page buffer." So we have to pass the page buffer {{pageBitmap}} to the GenericRefinementRegion class. I tried something quick and it worked immediately. So all there is to do is to find a better way to implement this, e.g. if the {{GenericRefinementRegion}} can access the {{JBIG2Page}} class.
