session cookies

2 questions:

1.) Are "session cookies" different in any way than regular cookies? If so,
do browsers treat them any differently and allow users to allow one kind and
disallow the other kind?

2.) Does anybody know approximately what percentage of people (in general)
allow session cookies?

I'm worried that an e-commerce site, like the one we're building, would lose
customers over something as "trivial" as this. If I'm looking at Amazon's
URLs properly, it seems like they use URL rewriting with a long numeric
hyphenated ID. Can anybody confirm this?

RE: session cookies

See http://cocoon.apache.org/2.1/userdocs/transformers/encodeurl-transformer.html

You can use session cookies if the browser allows them and if it doesn't you can
encode the session id in your apps URLs. There's no need to lose users that
don't like cookies.
