running tomcat3.1 on port 80 but not as root

I wish to run tomcat 3.1 in *stand-alone* mode on port 80.
Platforms will be HPUX and Solaris.

For security reasons, I don't wish to have tomcat run as root.
Can this be done, or do I *have* to use apache as a front-end
if I want to do this?
