However, when the monitor is launched, internally, it has shifted the name to be all lowercase, e.g. "joanie-vm-1".  This causes the monitor initialization to fail and trafodion can not start.  There are no monitor core files generated.  This was analyzed via "gdb" as the monitor process was initializing.  The workaround is to specify that all node names must  use lowercase characters.
