svn commit: r903006 - in /subversion/site/publish: getting.html packages.html
Author: cmpilato
Date: Mon Jan 25 22:57:07 2010
New Revision: 903006
URL: http://svn.apache.org/viewvc?rev=903006&view=rev
Log:
Move binary package listing to their own page.
* site/publish/packages.html
Fork from "getting.html", heavily reformat, and add some JavaScript
cuteness to allow quick jumps to packages.
* site/publish/getting.html
Minor tweaks in light of the gutting of the binary packages portion
of this page.
Added:
subversion/site/publish/packages.html
- copied, changed from r902856, subversion/site/publish/getting.html

Nice stuff, but this commits makes "Packages" heading on
"packages.html" page redundant and can be removed.

There are some extra "<" characters that you can see when viewing the
page. Removing those is easy enough but the XHTML validation still
fails due to the <form> tag missing the required action element. Do
you want to just try to correct both of these?

Yeah, I made similar murmurings the other day. In general, it seems we
should favor the OSes for whom Subversion doesn't come via a semi-automated
package management system.

Looking at the list, one simple solution could be to just order from Z
to A but keep it alphabetical. That winds up with an order like this:
Windows
Ubuntu Linux
SUSE Linux
Solaris
Red Hat Linux
Mac OS X
OpenBSD
NetBSD
HP-UX
FreeBSD
Fedora Linux
Debian Linux
AIX

I helped with the redesign of the previous page, which was not great
but better than what we had before. This is the reason we used a
table. We wanted to just list things alphabetically, but we also know
Windows ought to be first. So we went with a table with commercial OS
on one side, and open communities on other and this kept it small
enough.
I would not object to an order that puts Windows first. I was just
trying to avoid things like "Ubuntu is more popular than Red Hat", or
"why are the BSD's at the end?"

Maybe the Windows packages need a more prominent location instead of 5 pages down on a more than average screensize.
I don't think the Aix packages which are the first on screen, come anything near the number of downloads of the Windows binaries.
The Apache 2.0 Windows binaries are only available for Subversion 1.5.X on tigris.org, so that link could be a bit less prominent compared to the 2.2 version or users are downloading a 1.5.6 version instead of 1.6.9.
