Using automake , building code in separate directory from the source

Does anyone happen to know about problems building axis2c in a separate
directory from the source?
All the Makefile.am include paths are referenced relative to top_builddir,
rather than top_srcdir.
I am new to automake, but other libraries reference both top_src dir and
top_builddir in the include paths.
Let me know if I am missing something here,
