Problem Compiling Xalan (-instances=static not recognized option)

Hi

I am having trouble building Xalan on my Red Hat Linux system (release 7.1),
using gcc version 2.96.

In order to get the library to build at all, I had to remove the option
-instances=static from the PLATFORM_COMPILE_OPTIONS variable.  I kept
getting an unrecognized option error. In addition to that, I get literally
thousands of "warning: argument of negative value `npos' to `unsigned int'"
errors.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem (s) are? FYI my runConfigure
options were

-plinux -cgcc -xg++ -minmem -nfileonly -tnative

Thanks,

Bruce
