Can't open "open office" now I'm running Mac OSX Snow Leopard

I've been running open office now for about five years on a MacBook with old OSX 10.4.8.  Now I've upgraded to Snow Leopard, the program doesn't open.  I've downloaded the latest version and it still reports a "time out" message if I try to start it.
