tomcat spawning processes

Hi there,

I observed that tomcat (3.1, apache 1.3.12, jdk 1.3b1,
linux 2.2.13, suse 6.3) constantly spawns processes. The
threads thread :-) pointed out that threads show up as
processes under Linux. So far, so good. But what is going
tomcat being active even when the webserver is not being
accessed (as I can see from the access logs). The CPU load
seems to be modest, but still ...
