Sending special steering codes to the printer

Hi!

I have asked for it some time ago, but I got only one answer (very
worrying answer): is there any method to send special steering codes
('escape sequences') to the printer using FOP? For example I want to
send something to printer on every page break. Is it possible?

It sounds to me like you want to learn (or you already know) how to
manipulate PCL or PostScript. If that's the case, there are tools listed
on FOP's Resource page that should help:

http://xml.apache.org/fop/resources.html#products-pdf

iText has been mentioned numerous times as a tool used to do this, so do
a search in the list archives for either post-process or iText or both...

Good luck!

I tend to agree with the others that FOP is not the place for printer
control. What tray or feeder a document prints from should not be
a part of the document.

One option is post processing on the output. If you output to PostScript
or PCL you can "wrap" the output with PJL commands to select the
printing and finishing options you want. On most modern printers PJL
gives you almost complete access to all the printers functions and features.

I think 'diacrictic code' is 'bar code' in your language (I'm using
polish) ;-). I know that I can print some black rectangles on page, but
why, if there is one simple 'escape sequence' in my printer interface
which can do this.

Well, changing page orientation in not really a problem. I think that in
this case there is some other ways to take the same efect. But the point
is that I need to steer my printer, using special codes, for serial
printing. This printer for example could put pages to the envelopes, has
paper guillotine. Sometimes (and this is the problem) I need to send
something special on every page break.

What do you mean with 'print diacritic code'? You usually don't
need to do anything special for printing non-ASCII characters.

Also for page-orientation, use a different page master. Some
renderers/printer-drivers are smart enough to tell the printer
what it should do.

Couldn't agree with you more, Glen. Perhaps the next step would be to ask
Adobe to add functionality like this to their pdf-spec ;) ( Meaning: Acrobat
does have a few printing options of its own - like 'Expand small pages to
paper size' -, but as for e.g. printer-dependent printing props, it simply
uses the platform on which it is running )

This seems outside the scope of FOP.

Glen

Well, it is not enough. I want to send codes like 'print diacritic
code', 'change feeder', 'change page orientation' e.t.c. My printer
(customer's printer) has very extended interface and I have to use it.
Do you have any idea?

You can't send control sequences to the printer, particularly
made difficult because &x1B (ESC) is not a valid XML character.

The question is: why do you think you have to send control
codes to the printer? After all, FOP is supposed to format
the content for you and send it in a way to the printer
which should cause it to print your stuff correctly.

If you are missing features in the PCL renderer, point them
out more explicitely.

Probably not. But enter it as an enhancement request
in Bugzilla.
