how to validate a xml file against a dtd-file ??

hi,

i posted some time ago to ask how can i validate a 
xml file against a dtd.

i turned the property parser.validate=true,

but the validation works only against a scheme - is there any
known way to validate against a dtd ???

is there anybody using the id()-function for - ID, IDREF - attributes ??

is there a sample anywhere ??

in every xsl-specification this function is documented, so i'm wondering
why i can't use it inside cocoon ??
