Hi Colin,

It would be great if someone were willing to submit code that would authenticate via LDAP.

Have a look at framework/ui-core/src/main/java/org/apache/manifoldcf/ui/beans/AdminProfile.java .  If you convert this class to login via LDAP in the manner you wish, and attach your code to this ticket, I can integrate your code in a reasonable way so that LDAP is one of the options available.
