   Sorry, trying to ramp up on some of these changes, so if this is answered elsewhere (maybe design doc) I'd be happy to read it.  Was creating a new abstraction weighed against using something already in the python ecosystem (e.g. [fsspec](https://filesystem-spec.readthedocs.io/en/latest/))
