Virtual Machine and Large Index

We have an index that is approach 3GB in size and have attempted to host a
lucene based search service on a virtual machine. We experienced horrible
search times and gave up on the idea of VMs. Has anyone had better luck with
this than we have? If so can you give us some tips?
