regarding to this articel: [here|http://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OFBADMIN/New+Features+Roadmap+-+Living+Document#NewFeaturesRoadmap-LivingDocument-Quickeranintuitiveaccesstobasicfunctionnalities%28creation,etc.%29] I decided to improve the lookup fields.
They shouldn't open in a page layer instead of a seperate windows.
My Patch contains a prototype (not a final patch), so what do you think about the new lookup windows?
Should i follow this idea, any suggestions?

No everything should work fine in my last patch from the 2010-01-18.
I tested this patch in a fresh checkout... no problems.
I mean in a next step to improve the lookup, maybe there are some other ideas which can be implemented.
This patch make a lot more work as expected, thanks for your patiences :-)

Jep you're right we have to refactor a little bit. But that schoouldn't be a problem :)
Next features to implement:
- Window close, when clicking outside the lookup
- Background fading, to focus the lookup
Hopefully next week i find a little bit time to handle this issus.

1) We already have a notice about Thomas Fuchs's works in the NOTICE file so it's OK.
4) True, but on the other hand, we should not have any trailing spaces :/ Adam and I have struggled against them many times, but they always creep in again :) Actually it's hard to avoid them, notably on new lines, etc. And most of them in this patch are from new lines...
5) From the patch wr.png, header_close_button.png and header_bg.gif are needed, so it's looks like wr.png is missing.

I tested your patch and it is really cool! Thank you for this work!
Here are my notes:
1) The grey area on the top of the popup should be used to drag the lookup in a different area of the screen so that the user can still give a look to page content in the background.
2) The actual patch only works on flatgrey but it corrupts the other themes (at least droppingcrumbs)
3) The header_bg.gif and header_close_button.png are now hardcoded in the js while they should be redefined by the theme.

next try .. (worked only with flat grey, i put it to the other themes when the lookup works completely).
What's new:
o We should be able to show/hide using the lookup icon --> worked
o They should be stretchable (possible?) --> (finally worked :-D)
o The intial size should be parameterizable --> worked
o The position should be parameterizable with an offset (with maybe also some simple paramters like centered, up-left, etc.) --> don't worked, until now the popup is set under the target field, i will handel this

I have looked at your latest patch.
Few comments:
1) Are we sure we can commit the resize.js file as it is? There is a license note that I do not know if is compatible with the Apache. I would like others to check at least thi file in the patch.
2) To check that a section is empty there is now the tag <if-empty-section section-name="body"/> you should use instead of <if-empty field="sections.body"/>
3) There are some conflict with the latest trunk
4) Generally to get the review simpler is better to remove all the formatting changes (there are lots of trailing spaces removal)
5) Where and which gif file need to be added to let the patch work?

I finished my work for today :-) The lookup works now under IE (IE nerves, i leraned IE bugs are never 'little').
The new lookup is added to all themes!

Hi Jacques,
so i had a look at the "lookups by name" issue. In the standard ofbiz it is used in the facility module
https://localhost:8443/facility/control/EditFacility.
What should i say, worked without promblems. I only can reconstruct your problem when i use the wrong decorator.
In the attached patch i changed the second input field in the example lookup in a "lookup layer by name"
Maybe u uses the new LookupPopupLayerDecorator instead of the LookupDecorator for your Lookup.
The original Lookups wouldn't work with the new decorator.
Conclusion: Lookup By Name, using set_values(), works without problems in the original and the new Lookup layout.

I just tried, no problems to apply the patch, the example with normal style works well on XP with FF3.5, Opera and IE8 but the example with center style does not work at all (nothing appears in any browsers). Could you have a look please ?

I have dreamt of it and it seems that you are on the right way. I have not much time to test it nor to think about it but here are some thoughts:
* We should be able to show/hide using the lookup icon
* They should be stretchable (possible?)
* The intial size should be parameterizable
* The position should be parameterizable with an offset (with maybe also some simple paramters like centered, up-left, etc.)

It works well indeed. I will commit it soon and I agree that some new ideas may come up. For instance I wonder if instead of showing/hiding using only the lookup icon we should not allow to hide simply by clicking out of the lookup area, like the calendar works for instance.
Anyway it's good enough for testing on a higher level. I will commit as is for the moment and I will ask the community to try to use this feature not only in example.

Yes, I agree it works well in the trunk. Except this issue I already reported: if you enter some characters in a zone to search (for instance some letters of the 1st name) and hit enter the lookup closes and nothing happens.

In a custom project I'm working on, we use "lookups by name" and we use the trunk. Those lookups work like the ordinary lookups, but on return they show the name of the object looked up instead of its Id (most of the time, users prefer to see names than Ids). For that we use also an hidden field where we put the Id (the hidden field has the same name than the description-field-name).
When I updated the project and tested I got an error with this patch. The error appears in the fieldLookup2 (in fieldlookup.js) because obj_target2.value == null (it's the last error message). I hope to have a closer look tonight to see if it's relate to custom code or not. I will let you know as soon as I get more information...
Chris Snow also reported an issue with the Calendar on user ML but I'm not sure it's related.

...could we have this popup feature implemented as a general PopUpDecorator (to be added to framework common) ?
The PopUpDecorator could be used whenever a developer what to design a screen that should be shown as popup.
The decorator would add the popup frame with the dragging/resizing feature. (The resize.js script should only be included in this Decorator)
Then in order to implement the lookups screens as popup (that you want to do here) we only need the existing LookUpDecorator use the new PopUpDecorator.

i create a seperate decorator for the lookup layer and included the new lookup in the macroRenderer.

The next step will be to extend it use everyrwhere in OFBiz (ie to replace old popup window lookups by new modern ajaxified layer lookups) but for that we need the positionning to work with all themes. Don't feel any pressure though, popup lookups exist for years in OFBiz and have never been an issue.
