Any #TomEE exclusive features?
Hello everyone!
I'm new here and excited about discovering TomEE. I have used it some
months ago for evaluation purposes and now I would like to resume my
involvement. And I would like to start with a topic for discussion: what
are the features that one can only find on TomEE? Thinking beyond the
JavaEE specification and outside of the box, what are the differentials?
Thanks and sorry for the vague question.

I think I'd call to attention the tomee-maven-plugin -
http://tomee.apache.org/tomee-maven-plugin.html - which can be used
for rapid application development and testing. It can even build
single-file executable JARs; which when you java -jar them, will
launch an Apache TomEE with your web application inside.
Unfortunately, the online documentation for the plugin is old and
stale.

Congratulations! :)
No worries on getting busy. We have a couple of other contributors (Jonathan, Jean-Louis) with adorable little ones that will celebrate their first birthday this year. I swear there was one more I'm forgetting.
If you have time to use any of the features over the next few months, that perhaps is even better. Feedback is valuable.

Hi,
just to give an update about this: Family is growing here, so I can't do it
(documentation) as fast as I would like to. So, since time is getting
scarce for me, I would be happy to see someone else starting it and I would
be happy to complement the text later.
Thanks for your understanding.

Thanks Chamil, the overall size as well, less than 50 MB for the web
profile.
The startup time, I mean to be ready to work with all specifications of the
web profile.

The multi driver support for datasource (through a dedicated classpath)
The security across all layers (jax-rs, ws-security, tomcat realm, jaas)
Dynamic datasource to implement data segregation
Ability to encipher password in files (database for exemple)
The CI friendliness. All ports can be found dynamically so you don't need
to care. The server can download itself using arquillian, start, deploy,
test, undeploy and stop.
Works where tomcat works (Tomcat is more than 70% in enterprises). All
tomcat friendly tools work (otherwise it's a crazy bug and let us know). It
means that companies does not have to change anything in process, audit,
etc.
Developers are used to tomcat and can use tools they like without the need
to learn or install new tools
Cloud friendly and integrated in providers (metawerx, jelastic, etc)

In this case, I will move those two points to the session "I'm not sure,
thus I have to research/compare more":
Points that I'm not sure, thus I have to research/compare more:
- maven plugin
- arquillian integration
- memory foot print
- server events
- skinny war support
- simple customization
- custom resources support
- datasource pooling library pluggability
Thanks!

check maven plugin and arquillian integration of other servers, they aren't
that far so it is clearly differentials. Several tests I wrote wouldn't
have been possible without tomee.

Thanks for the input guys. Is it ok if I hack those features a little bit
and try to document them?
I would like to concentrate on features that move TomEE steps ahead of
standards. Things that sound like a good idea, run like a charm, and don't
wait two years for a new standard iteration. I could identify the following
points that differentiate TomEE so far:
- abstract ejbs
- interface ejb
- dynamic persistence unit
- embeddable ejb
- jca
Points that I can see elsewhere, thus not differentials:
- maven plugin
- arquillian integration
Points that I'm not sure, thus I have to research/compare more:
- memory foot print
- server events
- skinny war support
- simple customization
- custom resources support
- datasource pooling library pluggability
Points out of scope:
- apache based
- community
Am I missing something else?

Re: Any #TomEE exclusive features?

Hi
I'd say support if abstrat ejbs, interface ejb (no impl), dynamic
persistence unit (reloading), its maven plugin, its arquillian integration,
all the tests features, its community, it is apache based, the embeddable
side of openejb, its server events, its skinny war support, its JCA
features (JCA.next, deployment in wars...), its simple customization, its
custom resources support, its datasource pooling library pluggability and
surely more...

Hi Hildererto,
First thing is TomEE is a Java EE 6 Web Profile certified stack.
The architecture of TomEE is loosely coupled with Tomcat.
One can simply deploy TomEE war on a Tomcat and thats it for J2EE
environment.
TomEE's memory foot print is low. Its comparatively lightweight to most of
the other J2EE servers. Hence it can serve better with less resources.
The above list is the only things I get into my mind (I am new too). May be
some expert will explain the missing part.
