cc: [~caomanhdat] what was the original intent of the design here? I have a PR up to demonstrate the problem, I'm not sure if we can ever get into a situation where a waiting thread is interrupted without the rest of the server going down anyway, but I also don't like to hope that a situation is impossible to avoid potential bugs.
