Running C1 & C2 side by side
Dear All,
I'd like to be able to set up both Cocoon 1 and 2 on the same server for
testing and development purposes under MacOS X (a FreeBSD like Unix).
The work I am doing at the moment requires Cocoon 1, so I have to keep that
going, but I'd like an easy way to start getting used to Cocoon 2 as well.
I assume the main problem is that Cocoon 1 requires it's Jars in
$TOMCAT_HOME/lib, and being there they will interfere with Cocoon 2 that
has them in $TOMCAT_HOME/webapps/Cocoon/lib.
Does anyone know if this kind of setup is possible, or will I have to run
two separate TomCats on different ports?
Any suggestions?
Thanks
regards Jeremy

You must be doing something else. I've got this same setup in my
configuration, but Cocoon2 absolutely will NOT work from the WAR file, I
have to include it in my class path (Tomcat 3.3beta2 rpm install). I
also have a problem where Cocoon1 will not recognize any classes in
WEB-INF/classes, so I have to put those in my CLASSPATH which causes a
conflict with the instance of the app that I'm trying to port to
Cocoon2. Maybe my Cocoon2 problem is a configuration issue, but
everything else works on the server w/o being in the classpath (even
Cocoon1 when it doesn't require WEB-INF/classes). If anybody can shed
light onto why c2 won't run from WEB-INF/lib I'd appreciate it.

Yes, it is.

Try to download the CDK from here: http://ziel.sm.pl/
Also, you can contact it's author for explanations.
If you need only a running version of Cocoon 2 then everything is simple:
1. Download Tomcat 4.0b5 (or higher) from http://jakarta.apache.org Tomcat
binaries section.
2. Unpack it, set your CATALINA_HOME environment variable to point to the
Tomcat directory.
(Run bin/startup.bat to check that it works, goto to the
http://localhost:8080).
3. Get the latest Cocoon from the CVS (instructions are somewhere at
http://xml.apache.org/cocoon/cocoon2)
4. Build it using the command line from the INSTALL file.
5. Copy build/webapp/cocoon.war to your %CATALINA_HOME%/webapps directory.
6. Restart Tomcat.
7. Try http://localhost:8080/cocoon
8. Enjoy ...or ask more questions :)
Kot.

Oh, heck, I'd love to get my hands on this - having a working config would
give me just the jumpstart I need to get off of cocoon1/jserv and on to
tomcat/cocoon1/cocoon2 (which I too am about to begin struggling with).
Once I've got a working config, upgrading to the latest cocoon 1 & 2
should be simple as pie - it's just the initial; setup that has me
flummoxed.

If you have limited download space, could you write up some detailed
instructions? I'm going to *TRY* this on my own, but any more detailed
help would be nice - perhaps something the maintainers/committers could
put on the web site (hint, hint)

Both of Cocoons are configured as web applications (*.war) and there is no
any jar in my classpath, except that are coming with Tomcat (I have only
tools.jar in my system classpath).
I think that it will work if you remove all Cocoon stuff from your classpath
and place all jars in your webapps/C1/WEB-INF/lib directory. Cocoon 2 can be
built as a *.war and need not any other actions, except coping it to
Tomcat/webapps and restarting the server.
If none of this help, I can send you a full archive with tomcat 3.3 and two
configured Cocoons (the so called CDK - Cocoon Development Kit). But I have
only old versions of Cocoon there: 1.8.0 and 2.0a3.
If you have any further questions feel free to ask.
Regards,
Konstantin Piroumian.

No problems.
Simply use latest versions of Tomcat 3.x or Tomcat 4.x and everything will
be find. Also, you will need at least Cocoon 1.8.x.

Yes, but now that problem is solved. I use Cocoon 1 and Cocoon 2 at the same
server (Tomcat 3.3beta and Tomcat 4.0b5) and they both work fine.
