are log mesasges text?

I think this issue quite closely is bound to the UTF-8 discussions
going on.

Are log messages text?

I don't think this thing has been said clearly anywhere yet - and it
seems that there are differing opinions. And this is not an issue
about charset, or null-characters or anything - those are details. But
are log messages text - or can log messages be images, for example. Or
what about MIME-multipart mail messages?
