[DRAFT] November Podling Report Edgent

Hi all,

I would probably submit this report asap … if there aren’t any objections.

Chris

===============================================
Edgent

Apache Edgent is a programming SDK and micro-kernel style runtime
that can be embedded in gateways and small footprint edge devices enabling
local, real-time, analytics on the continuous streams of data coming
from equipment, vehicles, systems, appliances, devices and sensors of
all kinds (for example, Raspberry Pis or smart phones). Working in
conjunction with centralized analytic systems, Apache Edgent provides
efficient and timely analytics across the whole IoT ecosystem: from the
center to the edge.

Edgent has been incubating since 2016-02-29.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

  1. Re-creating a working community
  2. Re-populating the PPMC
  3. Replenishing the group of mentors

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

For the past months there has been absolutely no activity in the project
Even if there has been an occasional Email from an external entity in the
last 3 months, the activity in the project has been solely me (Christofer)
writing emails without getting any form of response from the rest of the
  committers, PPMCs or mentors

The main problem here is, that when being voted in to the project, I had
been working on the build, but before I was able to start digging in the code
the rest of the team disappeared without me having had the chance to do a
reasonably significant amount of know-how transfer. Currently we have a
codebase for which we have a detailed understanding of the build, but
almost none of the code itself.

How has the community developed since the last report?

  * Total, we have 82 subscribers to our mailing list, an increase of 5 since the last report.
  * There have been two questions asked by users and two little discussions about these issues on the list
  * Discussions started on the private list have been left unresponded
  * On 19th September 2018 Christofer had a talk about Apache Edgent on the Solutions.Hamburg TechCamp

How has the project developed since the last report?

  * According to JIRA, 0 new issue were added and none were resolved in the last 90 days
  * 0 commits were made in the last 90 days.

How would you assess the podling's maturity?

After withdrawal of most of the active committers and PPCM members currently
a new committer, PPMC and mentor-base has to be built. Being working hard on
the PLC4X podling, I am currently evaluating if I am going to be willing and able
  to achieve this goal

  [ ] Initial setup
[ ] Working towards first release
  [X] Community building
  [ ] Nearing graduation
  [ ] Other:

Date of last release:

  2017-12-14 Apache Edgent 1.2.0

When were the last committers or PPMC members elected?

In August 2017, we added Christofer Dutz as a new committer
  and PPMC member.

Hi Julian,

it's a pleasure to hear from you!

Pleasure's all mine :)
Unfortunately, there isn't as much interest as one would expect. Everyone's
into more "trendy" topics nowadays like ML and AI, but there's some who're
actively looking into the subject.

As I tried to dig into the Eclipse IoT Eco System the last time, it's good
> to hear that we have people on the list that are familiar with Mozillas
> Gateway!

I wouldn't say I know it in-depth but enough to move around.

And, to be honest, it would be great if you could find some time to

Of course, whenever time permits I'll help however I can. Btw, just to
clarify; by "media" I meant graphic design related (Photoshop) stuff.

Would it be possible for you to share some details about your use cases
> (where you used edgent, or at least considered to use edgent) with us?
> I would be really interested in it.

Absolutely! My project is based on the server end of an IoT infrastructure.
I'm basically proposing an *Architecture for a central server to understand
nested (Multi-hierarchy) Fog Networks connected to it*. In this case, a Fog
Network refers to several Edge Devices connected to an Edge Gateway.
The project actually multi-phased and in reality, involves the Edge Devices
and Gateways along with the server. But given the time constraints, my
scope was limited to the latter. Hence, why I took a ready-made Edge
Gateway solution like Mozilla's.
I hope that makes sense.

Also, is there any possibility of creating a discourse forum for Edgent?
I know given the circumstances we're a little tight on manpower and budget,
but just putting it out there. :)

Hi,

BTW 3 mentors are not a requirement, but a nice to have, and what seems to work well and that number can help out when one or two of the others are for what ever reason not able to help.

Thanks,
Justin

Hi and thank you for all of your replies.

It has convinced me that giving reviving Edgent a try could be the best option.

I'll try to figure out how we can achieve that. For now I have to find a third mentor and then we can get started.

I'll keep you posted.

Chris

    Hi Julian,

Thanks for pointing to NiFi, I'll have a look at it. I used edgent at that
time since it was simple enough to get a custom topology up and running
    without any added bloat.

Regarding the dataset, it is a series of unrelated events and definitely
partitioning is possible. But I was not worried about that aspect, since I
was focusing on placement of the topology and not on improving the
performance through parallelism of some sort. Is it why you asked that?

I'll start a new thread on the fault tolerance aspects. It should be
interesting to understand others' view on it.

Re: [DRAFT] November Podling Report Edgent

Posted by Gayashan Amarasinghe <ga...@gmail.com>.

Hey Gayashan,

thanks for the insights.
Sounds very interesting, another interesting tool for that could be Apache NiFi / MiNiFy which has this "partitioning already in its core (but better keep here ; )
Are these datasets timeseries of related or rather unrelated events, so does order matter, is partitioning possible?

And regarding Fault Tolerance, that is a wide and very interesting field, but I agree, better start a new thread for that and then discuss it there in dept.

Hi Nuwan,

it's a pleasure to hear from you!
I didn’t know that there is so much usage of edge processing in academia, that’s pretty cool to hear.
As I tried to dig into the Eclipse IoT Eco System the last time, it's good to hear that we have people on the list that are familiar with Mozillas Gateway!

And, to be honest, it would be great if you could find some time to contribute documentation or media as this is something programmers tend to skip __

Best
Julian

PS.:
@Nuwan and @Gayashan:
Would it be possible for you to share some details about your use cases (where you used edgent, or at least considered to use edgent) with us?
I would be really interested in it.

Dear Gayashin,

thank you very much for your response.
It's great to hear that edgent is or will be used in academic work.
Overall its good to see that edgent is actively used.

And I know about the time boundaries you surely have as PhD Student (about to finish mine soon...) but nonetheless I think there are many things you could do to contribute in little time. It is always good to have many peoples participating in discussions or bringing in their views and use cases. And if you use edgent for academic purposes this is great for the project and helps to 'spread the word' about it.

So thank you very much for your mail, and although we have 'lost' most of the seasoned edgent programmers (of the current core), feel free to ask questions if there are any and we'll always find a way to figure it out (I guess there are many very talented people on the list which are able to dig into the code if necessary)
Julian

Hey Justin,

Please don't take my words too literal (as I'm not (yet) used to many of the ASF processes).
It's good to hear that you are still onboard. For me as rookie, it's good to hear that we have multiple seasoned ASF member onboard.

Regarding my statement with the attic.. what I really meant was to "finish" the project officially, because currently, its kind of in a zombie mode.

But, I would definitely prefer a "revival" : )

Hi Chris,

thanks for the effort.
Even if I'm no commiter / PPMC I'll take the freedom to share my opinion on the state of the project.
I think we (as we-that-are-on-the-list) have to decide whether we want to (re-)start the project, building a new PPMC (currently we have effectively one with chris) and start to do some work in edgent.
Or whether we decide (or formally I guess PPMC and the mentors decide) to move edgent to the attic.

Personally, I can say that I see some potential in the project (as already discussed offline with chris) and can also offer some support from me and possibly some of my colleagues (also active in plc4x).
But, decide the effort for writing code, docu and doing some 'communication' about the project, it would then be important to have a clear mission statement and a new PPMC which has some ideas or visions on how or where we want to bring this project.

Of course, this is solely my opinion and I cannot do more than to offer my help and effort but all of this only makes sense with a community, otherwise my colleagues and I can code together in our lovely office : )

Best
Julian

    Hi all,

I would probably submit this report asap … if there aren’t any objections.

    Chris

    ===============================================

      * On 19th September 2018 Christofer had a talk about Apache Edgent on the Solutions.Hamburg TechCamp

How has the project developed since the last report?

      * According to JIRA, 0 new issue were added and none were resolved in the last 90 days

How would you assess the podling's maturity?

After withdrawal of most of the active committers and PPCM members currently
a new committer, PPMC and mentor-base has to be built. Being working hard on
the PLC4X podling, I am currently evaluating if I am going to be willing and able
      to achieve this goal
