As [~mlibbey] pointed out, in order to use some of the newer features (like simple retry) you also have to set parent_is_proxy=false. I'm not sure why that dependency is useful, considering that as far as the HTTP/1.1 specifications says, the request format of "GET http://example.com/ HTTP/1.1" MUST be handled.

Basically, they way I see parent_is_proxy=false is a way to deal with misbehaving origin servers.
