Alan,
in re-reading this document with a slightly fresher mind, I noticed that you put
a great deal of what is essentially api documentation into the doc/arch/ section,
rather than into doc/reference/api/.
Was that on purpose?

A deliberate accident of document production. For various reasons that documentation was originally built independently. My intention is to remove or incorporate that back in to the main docs. I thought I had gotten most of it but apparently not.
