> std::atomic template is only compatible with types which are "trivially copyable".  std::chrono::*::time_span is _not guaranteed_ trivially copyable, and will probably change in future versions of the library, so this code needs to be refactored to use std::atomic with a template parameter that's an integral type like a long long.  The "rep" field of std:: duration should work fine for this.
