[jira] Commented: (DERBY-952) DerbyNet/derbynetmats/NSinSameJVM fails on Win XP / Cygwin with Symantec Client Firewall Version 5.1 enabled

Posted by "Bryan Pendleton (JIRA)" <de...@db.apache.org>.

Bryan Pendleton commented on DERBY-952:
---------------------------------------

I think it's OK for the Network Server to fail to start if the firewall prevents it. As long as the test does not out-and-out hang in this case, but instead reports a test failure saying that the Network Server did not start, I think the software is working properly, yes?

[jira] Commented: (DERBY-952) DerbyNet/derbynetmats/NSinSameJVM fails on Win XP / Cygwin

Posted by "Kathey Marsden (JIRA)" <de...@db.apache.org>.

Kathey Marsden commented on DERBY-952:
--------------------------------------

I am a little concerned about this change to the derby_tests.policy file:

-  permission java.net.SocketPermission "0.0.0.0:20000", "connect";
+  permission java.net.SocketPermission "0.0.0.0", "connect";

I think your idea is neat, but I think changing the derby_tests.policy to allow connection from any port for 0.0.0.0 is maybe a dangerous thing because it means all the tests will run that way and might ultimately allow a regression to be introduced so that we always have to have this permission. So I think switching to 1527 would be better. I su ppose even the change to 1527 adds some risk.

Posted by "Kathey Marsden (JIRA)" <de...@db.apache.org>.

Kathey Marsden commented on DERBY-952:
--------------------------------------

This test has failed in the past with the same symptom on some platforms/machines because of the port it uses to start network server (20000) if it is being used for something else. The test originally used this port because there was no way to disable the harness start of network server.

One possible thing to try would be to switch to the default port and use the harness startServer=false property in NSInSameJVM_app.properties to disable the harness start of network server.

-------------------------------------

The test is passing under both DerbyNetClient and JCC on Windows XP (command prompt) using the
10.2.0.5 alpha - (426734) and jdk 1.5.0_07. No patch was applied

Hence was wondering if the test is still failing for others and if the patch is needed.

I still see this test fail. On Linux and Solaris I was able to bypass the failure by patching /etc/hosts. On Win this did not help.

[jira] Commented: (DERBY-952) DerbyNet/derbynetmats/NSinSameJVM fails on Win XP / Cygwin with Symantec Client Firewall Version 5.1 enabled

Andrew McIntyre commented on DERBY-952:
---------------------------------------

I think we can agree that the firewall software is working correctly in this case. It is good to note this, though, so that testers can find the test problem quickly in JIRA.

I believe this issue should be closed as 'Won't Fix' or 'Invalid' since it's not a Derby problem.

[jira] Commented: (DERBY-952) DerbyNet/derbynetmats/NSinSameJVM fails on Win XP / Cygwin

Ole Solberg commented on DERBY-952:
-----------------------------------

The test has <b>always</b> failed on this specific testmachine.

Following the advice in http://www.nabble.com/forum/ViewPost.jtp?post=5741503&framed=y I disabled the firewall software on the testmachine, and the test passes!

Symptom:
'derbynetmats/NSinSameVM' consistently fails with 'FAIL Network Server did not start '.

Configuration:
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional - 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600 / CYGWIN_NT-5.1 1.5.18(0.132/4/2) 2005-07-02 20:30 Cygwin
JVM: Sun Microsystems Inc. 1.5.0_05
Firewall: Symantec Client Firewall Version 5.1

(Seeing similar behaviour on Solaris and Linux test machines, which was resolved by adding an ip/name entry for the test machines in /etc/hosts, I had also tried editing the Windows hosts file on this testmachine. This had no effect.)

[jira] Commented: (DERBY-952) DerbyNet/derbynetmats/NSinSameJVM fails on Win XP / Cygwin

Posted by "Bryan Pendleton (JIRA)" <de...@db.apache.org>.

Bryan Pendleton commented on DERBY-952:
---------------------------------------

Are there any clues or theories abut this problem? I tried running with a similar, but not identical, environment, and failed to reproduce the problem. I am using Windows XP, without Cygwin, and I have both Sun JDK 1.4.2 and 1.5.0, and I tried with both -Dframework=DerbyNet and -Dframework=DerbyNetClient and couldn't get NSinSameJVM to fail for me.

Might it be cygwin that is the critical factor? If so, how might cygwin be affecting the test harness?

[jira] Updated: (DERBY-952) DerbyNet/derbynetmats/NSinSameJVM fails on Win XP / Cygwin

Posted by "Bryan Pendleton (JIRA)" <de...@db.apache.org>.

Bryan Pendleton updated DERBY-952:
----------------------------------

    Attachment: derby-952-idea.diff

Another possible way to solve this would be to let the system pick a free port number to use. That way, we wouldn't have to worry about what port number might be in use.

Attached is 'derby-952-idea.diff', which has a first start toward such an implementation (sort of a proof of concept). The idea is that we would:
 - use java.net.ServerSocket(0) to find a free port number on the system
 - tweak the derby_tests.properties to grant a looser permission to allow us to open an arbitrary port in our test
 - tweak the filtering code to filter out the actual port number from the output

We'd have to update some test reference files to include xxxFILTERED-PORT-NUMBERxxx if we used this approach. I haven't tried to figure out how many such output files there are. I just verified that, with the changes in this diff, I can successfully let the operating system pick a port number for us and then use that number rather than the hard coded 20000.

What do you think?

thanks,

bryan

Andreas Korneliussen updated DERBY-952:
---------------------------------------

    Attachment: DERBY-952.diff

Attached is a patch which does the following:
* Start the network server on the default port (1527) instead of 20000

The test already has set the property startServer=false in the _app properties file.
