[VOTE] Release of FOP 0.93

I have again prepared the release files for the FOP 0.93 release. They
were created from the tag
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/xmlgraphics/fop/tags/fop-0_93. You
can find them at http://people.apache.org/~spepping/. They are signed
with the same PGP key as this message. You can find this key in the
KEYS file in the distribution. The MD5 checksums are:

800d0a4e02e762179d9a424c187e4b3d fop-0.93-bin-jdk1.3.tar.gz
63838dad67cbd02614eca1919e797c79 fop-0.93-bin-jdk1.3.zip
69696c6ca0095e35719d9282db44fe48 fop-0.93-bin-jdk1.4.tar.gz
8c3d9726193fddd7e1edc81dcfc812d6 fop-0.93-bin-jdk1.4.zip
184c578a6269a8287ed150e0fc12868d fop-0.93-src.tar.gz
7cc7bfe0f452412a4f037fdf727ed69d fop-0.93-src.zip

Herewith I start a vote on this release. The vote will end in 72
hours, that is, on Sunday 7 January 2007 at 0.00hrs UTC.

If the vote passes the release files will be moved to the main Apache
website, we will wait 24 hours for the mirrors to catch up, and then
announcements will be sent to appropriate mailing lists.

Regards, Simon

As options they are still valid. That they are not working at the
moment can be read from the Known Issues page and from the Output
Targets page.

There is an error on the Known Issues page: PCL output support is
still mentioned as not having been restored. I will correct that in
the trunk documentation after merging the branch.

Yesterday I updated teh running file in trunk, so that on the web site
and in following releases this is in sync with FOP itself.

+1

I just tried fop-0.93-src.tar.gz and fop-0.93-bin-jdk1.4.tar.gz and
erything including sig/md5 looks good. Thanks for the hard work!

Ok, to do some nitpicking ;-)
The output options -svg and -mif should be removed from the -help text
as they aren't working at the moment.

+1 from me.

This time I downloaded the binary dist and ran simple.fo through and it
worked ok!

8 committers have voted. All votes are positive, although there were
some reservations about some imperfections. Of the PMC, 6 out of 8
members have voted. Therefore the release has been accepted.

I will move the above files to the distribution directory

mirrors to catch up, and then announce the release.

Exactly what I thought. Can we please get back to actually doing stuff
instead of just talking about it and pumping adrenalin into those who
are doing the hard work? You've all got committer access and can work on
those problems. Thanks.

Agreed.

Agreed. I was just being more thorough than I have before. BTW, I the
build with the errors was building via SVN from the new TAG, and it
was just testcases that had issues..

In light of the fact that it's merely test cases that failed, I am
changing my vote to +1

FWIW, as I tested only the binary tar.gz distribution I just grabbed the
src dist and build from scratch (again all done under Linux). No
problems with the build as such at all. Yes, there are some niggling
bits like testcases fail when built in a headless environment and the
overall testcase build warns at the end because the hyphenation files
are not by default present. But that has always been the case.

Unless the problems observed by the Maestro and Joerg are actually new
and not present in the previous distributions I am still happy to
recommend to proceed with the release. In the end most users who rely
on distributions will just use the binary distro and that seems to work
fine.

And yes, it would be really nice to have it all perfectly clean and all
examples to build with a minimum of info/warn/error logs. But who is
going to do it?

Like Jorg, I too had problems. But my problems occurred building via
ant. I got WARNINGS with a few of the test cases, and a couple even
indicated SEVERE. I'll provide some details (they're on a different
system.

However, after building, I didn't have errors executing FOP via the
following command (from either the src build or the binary download):

java -jar build/fop.jar -fo examples/fo/basic/border.fo -pdf
~/Desktop/border.pdf

I too would give a tepid +0.8 for this so far.

Simon Pepping wrote:

I compiled the source tar.gz on Win2K/Cygwin/JDK1.4.2_06 ok, but
running the result on the examples (using "ant examples") generates
lots of noise like:
  [fop] 04.01.2007 23:54:37 org.apache.fop.apps.FOUserAgent configure
  [fop] 04.01.2007 23:54:39 org.apache.fop.layoutmgr.inline.
   LineLayoutManager$LineBreakingAlgorithm updateData2
This looks like debug/trace logs but I can't find the cause of this.

There's also something which also recently cropped up on fop-dev:
[fop] SCHWERWIEGEND: svg graphic could not be built:
        file:..../fop-0.93/examples/fo/basic/:-1
[fop] The attribute "width" of the element <rect> is required
Shouldn't this work out of the box?

Also, basic/link.fo seems to use hyphenation, which results in a
fatal diagnostic due to the missing hyphenation patterns.

Other examples like basic/list emits lots of overflow warnings, which
should probably also be avoided.

The fop.bat prints a stray "java" (including the quotes), apparently
caused by the ECHO "%JAVACMD%" near the end, which might irritate
users.

No stoppers but a somewhat "+0.8" only for a non-beta release (mainly
because of the first point). I'll open a bug so that fixing the examples
wont get lost.
