Thanks guys,
I probably didn't make the question clear, I sortof proposed a solution
when I should have said what I was trying to achieve.
Also, I think I was using the 'shell' side of my brain
rather than the 'java' side. :/

Such a simple answer makes me feel a little silly. I think
when scripting in Velocity I need to keep reminding myself that I
have access to ALL Java methods - very neat.

Ok. Project is back on track! :)
