use of olingo.org

Hi Olingo devs,

It's good to see your setup here is going well. Each month the IPMC
appoints random projects to "shepherds". This month I was assigned the
Olingo project. In my review I provided the following feedback which I copy
here for the communities feedback. Your mentors will help figure out the
right course of action.

"The projects documentation is on http://olingo.org. It is, as far as I am
aware, a requirement to use the apache.org domain for all official content.
This is not a legacy domain that needs to be moved during incubation. It is
a domain that has been created during incubation. It is also unclear who
owns that domain and how content for it is managed. All properties using
ASF trademarks must be owned and managed by the PMC. I see no engagement
from mentors on this topic so assume they missed this development.

Other than this issue the project is still in the initial setup phase."

Hi,

I have the same opinion.
It is better to have this domain redirecting to the
'olingo.incubator.apache.org' (instead of redirection to something like
'http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olingo').
And also I think the change to use a 'forward' can surely be done by the
domain owner.

Then everybody is happy and we can all together develop in the Olingo
project ;o)

Kind regards,
Michael

Hi Ross,

Since the podling is starting out I took the creation of the domain as a good thing - it protects the trademark. How it works is something we can work out in due course - along with ownership, etc.

Dave

Just to close this off the shepherd report now reads:

"The project is still in the initial setup phase so not much to report.
Mentors
are engaged where they need to be."

Hmmm... I'd suggest a forward would be better (i.e. the address bar shows
the apache.org address). The reason I suggest this is twofold:

1) the ASF take the position that if it is not on an apache.org address
then users cannot trust it
2) the CMS is broken by this redirection (although not if you go to the *
apache.org address).

However, this is only a suggestion and can be freely ignored. Thanks for
putting me straight I'll update the shepherds notes on the board report.

 Hi Ross,

All official Olingo content is on an apache.org domain and is
maintained there. olingo.org merely redirects to
 olingo.incubator.apache.org.
As long as olingo.org is not mentioned in any official documentation, I
don't think there is any further action necessary.
