[JIRA] Created: (CAY-887) CM Usability:Recent Files list shold be longer

CM Usability:Recent Files list shold be longer
----------------------------------------------

                 Key: CAY-887
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/cayenne/browse/CAY-887
             Project: Cayenne
          Issue Type: New Feature
          Components: CayenneModeler GUI
            Reporter: Thomas Bernhard
            Assignee: Andrus Adamchik

#1 Recent Files should be renamed to "Recent Projects"
#2 Please extend the list from 4 to 12 elements. With only 4 elements only, this featre it is almost useless. Working with more projects, always require using the "Open" Dialog.
#3 Add a number in front of each recent (file)project.
#4 Use a better icon (not the open folder icon) since the files from the list are "cayenne projects" so the cayenne icon would be better.

> This is really a loaded issue. Please separate future issues into individual JIRA issues.
I didn't thought it was loaded :) - I just numbered the things to do to be easier. I wanted to avoid too many small issues - too high fragmentation.

Also regarding #1 I'm not sure if it's 100% : the class (in code) is still called RecentFiles... :) . Of course - from a user point of view it's not important how the code looks like (was just supposing that renaming the UI functionality would mean refactoring the code too :) ).

I also created a new issue for #3 (https://issues.apache.org/cayenne/browse/CAY-905)as I was not very precise (sorry for that - I supposed everybody knows this feature on windows desktop applications - it's a real time saver).

If it is made to a menu item mnemonic (as opposed to a part of the
label), that's another story. I agree.

Okay. That's distinctly not what I had done. If you'd like to see this
implemented, please open up a separate JIRA for it. That one had too many
things going on anyway.

What's important is not that the order changes but that the number is
a mnemonic too so the application can be used totally by the keyboard.

Just take a look at the many applications on windows and you will see this numbering:
Just a few: Photoshop, Eclipse(like menu items -> not submenu items), MS Office, etc.

Fair enough. My stance on it was that it didn't hurt anything and a user
asked for it. I was rather indifferent about it anyway.

Also once I open a project via open dialog, the numbers are gone.

If you ask me, "#3 Add a number in front of each recent (file)
project" is a non-feature anyways, as the order changes every time
you open another project, as the most recent one is pushed on top. At
least on Mac I don't remember any apps using the numbering. I suggest
we remove the ordering all together.

Glad to hear. I've not really done much with the Modeler before, so I took
on the task to get a bit more accustomed to the codebase. I wasn't really
sure what was going to happen :-P

Interesting. I don't see that behavior at all :-/

In fact, the only way I could test the feature was to open a whole bunch of
Cayenne project files. I can back out the change, however, if it is indeed
problematic.

Kevin,

looks like the function is broken now. Every time I open anything
from history, a File dialog appears, instead of simply opening the
file. I suspect the file name passed to the action method is now
invalid, including the numeric prefix.

You can definitely resize icons using Sanselan - it is quite easy -
but you're not likely to be satisfied with the results; icons, being
small and unusually dense, are easily damaged by resampling and
reduction of bit depth.

Charles.

You can definitely resize icons using Sanselan - it is quite easy -
but you're not likely to be satisfied with the results; icons, being
small and unusually dense, are easily damaged by resampling and
reduction of bit depth.

Charles.

Forwarding this to the sanselan folks who have a project to
manipulate images.

I wonder if there is a feature in sanselan that does this kind of stuff.

Yeah, that's why I didn't have any hard feelings about closing it. I think
the intent is for something similar to how the OS associates a program's
icon with a file if the program association is configured. I could go
either way on it, particularly because one could argue that the menu
expansion is the "open" action and that the selection should then refer to
the file.

Oh, I see now. I thought the OP meant the icon which appears only in
Windows frames (I am using OSX so I don't see them). But he meant the
'open folder' icon in the toolbar and menu. I don't agree that this
should be changed to the Cayenne logo since then the original meaning
(open file) is completely obscured. By the same reasoning all icons
could be Cayenne logos since they all do something "cayenne".

I'll leave it as is.

Great. I guess it would be the same size as the other icons in the
resources directory.

When it comes to resizing raster graphic files, I've never been able to do
it and make it look good. So, any help would be much appreciated.

I've got the tools for that. What pixel size do you want and what
colour depth? There is already a nice OSX Finder icon which could be
adapted.

This is really a loaded issue. Please separate future issues into individual JIRA issues.

I've addressed 1, 2, and 3, but 4 requires someone to generate an icon of the appropriate size to appear in the menu. Given enough time, I'm sure I could find the tools to do it, but it'd be best for somebody else. If you would really like to see it happen, please open up a new issue for it. Otherwise, I don't want to keep this one open just for that.
