[DISCUSS] Graduate Apache ShardingSphere (incubating) as a TLP

Hi!

After an enthusiastic discussion with the community[1], finally positive
vote result[2].

We'd like to bring this to a discussing at the IPMC.

Please see the proposed resolution below and let us know what do you think.

A few status to help with the discussion:

- There are 1301 emails sent by 159 people in dev mailing-list excepted
GitBox forwarded;
- 2539 Issues created during ASF incubating, 2468 Issues resolved during
ASF incubating;
- 1073 PRs created during ASF incubating, 918 PRs merged during ASF
incubating;
- There are 89 contributors for now;
- There are 4 versions released successfully conformant to Apache release
policy by 3 release managers;
- There are 2 new PPMCs and 8 new committers were invited to join the
community.

We had already finished the Podling Maturity Assessment for
ShardingSphere[3], the 34 items are all passed.

We had resolved all branding issues which include Logo, GitHub repo,
document, website and DockerHub image.

Hi Justin,

Thank you for reminding, I have updated website again. Please check
again[1]. The changes are inline.

> One minor things the promise “fork me on GitHub” directs people towards
unreleased code, and I get it aimed at developers not users, but perhaps
not have it on the front page?

Yes, you are right. At first sight of users can see “fork me on GitHub”
only, the download link is in the middle of page. So I just recover the
download link back to nav bar. Perhaps duplicate for two download links,
but it can let user find the download links easier.

See [1] for logos.

I have replaced the old style apache logo to a new one.

This isn't an infra issue. Infra is completely indifferent on the matter.
As a member of the brand committee, I don't think it's a brand issue

The discussion on trademarks is about general sponsor links. As far as I can tell, it has nothing to do with “Fork Me”.

I read the thread on board@ and I looked at the notes in the agenda from 2014_12_17.

I don’t see a consensus that Fork Me is not allowed. I do see a consensus that it’s not preferred. I do see that Wicket removed it. Other projects still have it. I do see a preference to have an alternate ribbon which doesn’t have the words “GitHub”, but has the same behavior. I’m not sure if any such ribbon was ever created. Justin, you mention something Sally mocked up, but I couldn’t find that. Do you have a link?

If an alternate ribbon was created, that should be recommended instead of making a blanket statement that “Fork Me” is not allowed.

Ah, thanks Justin. Sorry I didn't notice the board action and the
recommendation from trademarks.

I don't think there's much left to discuss. The board and trademarks
have made their policy clear. We (the incubator) should make podlings
aware of the policy.

I think "fork me on GitHub" is less contentious than it was 5 years
ago, so whatever was decided then will suffice for now.

I read the board@ thread and, unless I missed it, there was no edict from the board to not say “fork me on GitHub”.

Therefore it’s down to projects’ discretion how they promote themselves. (Consistent with branding policy etc.)

Unless and until the board speaks I don’t think we need to tell projects (or polling) what to do.

I was wondering what the best place for this discussion would be. I couldn’t really think of a better place than incubator.

I considered starting the discussion on board@ or members@, but I didn’t want another private discussion. Not sure about infra and I don’t know how many folks follow that list. It doesn’t seem like an infra question.

Maybe a branding discussion? Maybe comdev?

I figured incubator is as good a place as any, and the discussion was triggered from here. Dunno.

If anyone has a strong preference to move it somewhere else, that’s fine with me.

Considering this and the Board discussion mentioned in this thread I
think changing the language would work, and also using a nofollow
attribute on the link to GitHub.

I suggest:
a) Changing the language of such banners to "Pull Requests Welcome"
(because "forking" can be misunderstood and due to our fierce
corporate independence principle)
b) Asking our projects to add a "rel=nofollow" attribute on the link to GitHub
c) Asking our projects to make sure the README of their repositories
points to their .apache.org URL

I think this information belongs to
https://www.apache.org/foundation/marks/pmcs as that's where projects
find the ASF requirements for their websites - this one is not
strictly about branding but it's good to have all this info in one
place.

If we agree on this I suggest that we propose a patch for that page to

If there’s agreement on this, I’d suggest someone come up with some CSS which can be popped into project sites similar to what GitHub offers for their banners. (I’m not very good at CSS myself…) ;-)

The problem is that "fork" means two different things, and that some
members seem to be interpreting fork in the sense of a project level fork -
meaning creating a new community out of an existing project. Whereas the
fork on github is really about raising pull requests Paul is mentioning.

We should have no issue with projects having the "fork me on github"
anywhere since it doesn't mean they're encouraging creating a new project.

I would think it is almost ubiquitous now for developers to know that the
easiest way for them to create a PR for instance is to fork the project
(the source code if you like) on Github.

It seems sensible to encourage the use of "Fork me on Github" as it
substantially lowers the barrier of newcomers to our projects but it would
seem prudent to ensure that the links are made low key so as not to appear
like banner ads. Other ways to contribute should be given equal prominence.

Thanks for the link to the board@ list. I agree with you that it’s a shame the discussion was on a private list.

Yes. It seems that the concern of some is that link is an “ad”.

It seems to me that the primary purpose for the link is to make contributing easier and the “advertisement” is secondary.

I don’t really see the concern for using unreleased code any more than having a link to the Apache repos.

The fact is that GitHub has become the defacto place where much of the development is being done on many projects.

The compromise which seemed acceptable to most in that thread seems to be to remove “GitHub” from the link.

I also wonder if opinions might have changed in the 5 years since that discussion. In that time, GitHub has only become more ubiquitous and more adopted by many Apache projects.

Thanks,
Harbs

Hi,

In this particular case it could be seen as a) advertising a commercial entity on an ASF’s project front page (using their marketing slogan) b) encouraging users (who may not understand the consequences) to use unreleased code rather than using the officially released downloads.

I think it fine, and I don’t think anyone would have an issues with, links to GitHub in other places or when context is given, on a projects "how to contribute" or "developer page" would be best place.

Thanks,
Justin

"Fork Me" on GitHub (was Re: [DISCUSS] Graduate Apache ShardingSphere (incubating) as a TLP)

Posted by Harbs <ha...@gmail.com>.
This is not the first time “Fork Me” came up, but I don’t think there’s been a clear consensus on the topic.

I think it’s an important topic, so I’m starting a new discussion.

It seems to me that the concern with using “Fork Me” is that it’s somehow promoting unofficial releases. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

To me, “Fork Me” is not suggesting that users should use unofficial releases, but rather “please fork the source code on GitHub, so you can easily contribute”.

I think that’s a very different message.

My personal opinion is that “Fork Me” should be allowed anywhere on a project site because it can help build add contributions which builds the community.

Thoughts?

Also I want to say that the intent is important when discussing many of
these cases.
In this case hopefully most of us we all agree, the original intention of
the project community is to encourage broader participation of the
community, rather than distributing un-released distribution.

Hi

Thanks for everyone’s attention.

I see Justin's concern, and we will consider Craig's suggestion to make some modifications.

Besides, as Tianqi and Sheng said, our initial and simple idea is to use `fork me on gitHub`
to encourage more people to join the community or raise their questions,
which seems to cause some troubles, so we will change it ASAP.

helpful to summarize all the views and their pros and cons to give a
comprehensive picture.

The current summary of the points are:

Pros:
-P0: Encourages developers community participation to the project,
exercise community over code.

Concerns(in someone might view)
- C0: it as un-released distribution, which violates the release policy
- C1: Link to github serves as ads to github

Intent
- The shardingsphere community has good intent starting from P0, but not
necessarily shares the same opinion over C0 and C1.

--------
Again I think the intent is important, after aour goal is welcome and
support these projects and help them grow the community in apache way.
While different people or community might have choose to do it different
like being suggested, I personally might even agree with you that the link
should not be in the frontpage

In this case, if there is no strict ruling, I think it would be helpful to
let the project community choose the verdict, while acknowledging that
there might be different opinions in different communities.
Of course the solution Crag suggested seems to work as well :)

TQ

Hi,

By adding that you have placed a large prominent ad to commercial entity on your home page. You are also using a marketing slogan from GitHub. Ask yourself would you do that with any other commercial entity on your front page?

I've already removed the GitHub logo.

Perhaps this could be resolved by having the github logo on the front page refer to https://shardingsphere.apache.org/community/en/contribute/contributor/ where contributions to the project (developer audience) are discussed.

The first item on that page under "Develop Flow" is "Fork shardingsphere repo". Maybe "Develop Flow" could be "Developer Flow".

I see, in that case, it would be really nice to add a link to the original
email context (about the infra request to remove the github link),
which would help clarified the situation in the first place. And a good way
to exercise the public archival principle.

It really depends on how do you interpret the github link as a un-released
distribution. A tarball of un-released source code is of course a
un-released distribution. It seems to be a bit broad to classify a github
link as a un-released distribution :)

In most cases, github is one of the important places where community
developments(and possible issue answering) happen, and it seems to be OK
that the project community can choose to welcome their more developers to
work together, as per Apache way.

Would be interesting ask INFRA about their position on this issue.

I can see arguments goes both ways:)

Apache is about community over code, github is certainly a place where the
(an important part of)community goes to, highlighting the link to that
seems to be OK if the project decide to do so.

Hi, Justin

I think you misunderstand my point.

In the GitHub project is just saying the project uses GitHub. Just consider
it as a widely used platform.
The fork me thing, is just encouraging people to take part in code
development. Nothing more.
I don't think people would think this is a way to get official release.

Of course, my personal perspective, only.

Yes, since `Release code` is more important for the user,
`Download` button is put in the right center of the page to direct users to download page.
“fork me on GitHub” link is designed to welcome more people(Especially developers) to join in ShardingSphere community.

Hi Sally,

We are talking about graduation Apache ShardingSphere(incubator) project.

There is a problem with users page[1]. This page lists all companies and organizations who using Apache ShardingSphere(incubator).

The source of user list are coming from Github issue[2] which registered by users themselves, the logos in user wall picture are collected from their official website.

We read this[3], it may cross over to sponsorship or may cause branding issue.

Can the project keep this page? Could you give some advice? Thank you very much.

I just added to powered by logo in this page and ref="nofollow" for
organizations' link.

I changed back the url from users to powered-by[1].

Hi Sally,

Thanks for the confirmation. I will add the powered by logo in the page
soon.

The organizations are not using rel="nofollow", I will fix it ASAP.

Hello Liang --thank you for your message. My apologies for the delayed response.

To me what is proposed seems acceptable, similar to what is being done with other Apache projects [1] [2] [3] and many others.

You may also wish to consider promoting use of the "Powered by Apache" badge for your community --we've created one for you at http://apache.org/foundation/press/kit/poweredBy/

I'm also copying Mark Thomas, VP Brand Management/Trademarks, for his input.

Many kind regards,

Hi Sally,

We are talking about graduation Apache ShardingSphere(incubator) project.

There is a problem with users page[1]. This page lists all companies and
organizations who using Apache ShardingSphere(incubator).

The source of user list are coming from Github issue[2] which registered by
users themselves, the logos in user wall picture are collected from their
official website.

We read this[3], it may cross over to sponsorship or may cause branding
issue.

Can the project keep this page? Could you give some advice? Thank you very
much.

Hi Justin,

I know your concerns, and also, thanks for your feedback.
This page is simply to present who is using ShardingSphere.
If it gets you worried, we will remove it later.
BTW, could you provide some relative links to help us learn more about brand policy and what you mainly concerned about?

Best wishes,
Trista

Hi Liang, Juan and Craig

This is my idea.
Apache ShardingSphere is a database clustering system providing data
sharding, distributed transaction, and data(or Database?) management.

My points are
1. The world `middleware` is not clear as ShardingSphere as it provides
both embedded lib and proxy mode.
2. distributed governance and orchestration are not clear too. Due to we
are going to accept more features, such as scaling out(right?), data
management makes more sense to me.

Hi Craig,

As John mentioned, `distributed governance` is the `orchestration` module of ShardingSphere,
which helps user refresh configuration online, disable application or restrict access to databases.
If it is an issue, I suggest to rephrase it as `Orchestration`. What's your idea?

Hi Liang, Juan and Craig

This is my idea.
Apache ShardingSphere is a database clustering system providing data
sharding, distributed transaction, and data(or Database?) management.

My points are
1. The world `middleware` is not clear as ShardingSphere as it provides
both embedded lib and proxy mode.
2. distributed governance and orchestration are not clear too. Due to we
are going to accept more features, such as scaling out(right?), data
management makes more sense to me.

We'd like to bring this to a discussing at the IPMC.

Please see the proposed resolution below and let us know what do you think.

A few status to help with the discussion:

- There are 1301 emails sent by 159 people in dev mailing-list excepted
GitBox forwarded;
- 2539 Issues created during ASF incubating, 2468 Issues resolved during
ASF incubating;
- 1073 PRs created during ASF incubating, 918 PRs merged during ASF
incubating;
- There are 89 contributors for now;
- There are 4 versions released successfully conformant to Apache release
policy by 3 release managers;
- There are 2 new PPMCs and 8 new committers were invited to join the

We had already finished the Podling Maturity Assessment for
ShardingSphere[3], the 34 items are all passed.

We had resolved all branding issues which include Logo, GitHub repo,
document, website and DockerHub image.
