Compiling Map/Reduce Application

I am quite new to the MR paradigm (and java), and am wondering if anyone
can point me in the right direction as to how I can compile and run an
application on Hadoop which utilizes both of the MR and HDFS APIs.  It
would be great if anyone could point me to documentation if any exists.
