SplitViewNavigator - Navigator ontop of view possible?

Is there any way to use a SplitViewNavigator so that when the Navigator plane
is shown (on the left of the app/screen) id doesn't compress the main view
on the right of the screen, but instead appears OVER the top of the right
hand view. 

An example of this is using the Mail app on iOS in portrait mode.

I'm hoping for a full length view navigator rather then a 'pop out/callout'
which I know is possible....
