[users@httpd] Apache2 and Solaris8 too many httpd process with ..reading status

We recently implemented Apache2.0.47 on Solaris 8 in
production and found that we had a lot of httpds
taking up lot of CPU and user's complaining about
slugging response time.

On looking at the /server-status, we found a lot of
entries with no client, or VHost or Request. Only
found the value ..reading.

We restarted a couple of times and within a few
minutes we started seeing these entries.

Wondering what this could be.

TIA
