Noobie Questions

I have a list of questions about some issues I'm having.

I'm trying to set up a basic demo of Lenya as part of a scoping study into
the use of Open Source solutions for CMS development.

I have 2 fairly basic requirements for the initial demo, and I'm having
trouble with both of them and running out of time.

Basically I need to set up an input template to capture the following list
of fields for an article:
* Title (Text)
* Body (XHTML)
* Program Name (Text)
* Subject (From List) - is there a good way of doing hierarchical lists /
trees in Lenya?)
* Location (From List) - ditto
* Info Source (Text - 1 or more as required)
* Source (Text - 1 or more as required)
* Contributor (Text - 1 or more as required)
* Rights Holder (Text - 1 or more as required)
* Content Genre (From List)
* Editorial Genre (From List)
* Issued Date (Date)
* Broadcast Date (Date - 1 or more as required)
* Production Date (Date - 1 or more as required)

I am having trouble seeing how to set-up a new document input type from the
documentation on the official site, or in any of the other reading I've done
around the issue.

Please enlighten me if you can :-)

ALSO:

I want to be able to import XML from another source.

Now I can see how to set up a pipeline for displaying XML from another
source fairly easily however I have 2 issues with this:

1. I want to be able to say "if the page exists in the system already get
that data and transform it this way - otherwise look for it over here (the
alternative XML source - all in one directory for the purposes of the demo)
and transform it this way". I have managed to hijack the pipeline entirely
and display my alternative source XML OR display data from system in my
Lenya install - but I can work out how to do wither or both depending on
whether the data already exists.

2. When I do this - how does it create an editable object in Lenya? You see,
I don't just want to import data from the XML source and *display* it - I
want to it to become an editable object in the Lenya system, permanently. So
that from then on (after it has been edited the first time) it will load
from the Lenya data and be maintained in Lenya.

Please help if you can.

Nicholas.

Sorry - that was actually the wrong way around...

BXE was the edittor that MIT got it working for...

http://wiki.apache.org/lenya/MultipleEditAreasHowTo

I might see how this works - but any other advice is still welcome - I know
very little about this so far.

Thanks,
Nicholas.

Thanks for you reply, Michi.

I'd probably most like to use BXE if I can - but I saw some note from MIT
saying they *had* found a way of doing multiple field editting with custom
docutypes *but* it wasn't stable in BXE - so I was a bit unclear what the
limitations of each system are.

Basically I want to get something set up as quickly as poss. If you can
point me in the directions of some good documentation on how to set custom
docutypes and how to control the input fields in the "New document" process
- I would still apreciate it. I have almost solved my problems re: import -
so I am about to head full-steam back into getting the data capture
working... any advice welcome.

Cheers,
Nicholas.

what version are you using? Lenya 1.2.x or Lenya 1.4-dev from trunk?

see the chaching stuff within the default publication. It does something
similar.

what editor would you like to use: BXE, Yulup, Form based?

Since you describe a customized docutype above you will have to
customize some editor specific stuff, but
it depends on which editor you choose.
