[VOTE] move cocoon-lenya to subversion

after 1.2 ships, i expect quite some restructuring inside the
cocoon-lenya module. this is very painful with CVS. not to mention that
you cannot version directories..

with subversion 1.0 out, other victims^d^d^d^d^d^dprojects having made
the switch already and tool support for eclipse available, the time is
now here for the change.

btw, there are also svn clients available for windows (tortoisesvn.org),
mac os x (http://fink.sourceforge.net/pdb/search.php?s=svn)

i propose to switch to subversion after we tag lenya 1.2 final.

here is my +1

There is a subproject that bolts on distributed repositories to svn.
I don't know how capable it is.

I'm very please with monotone as well. Things that are difficult or
impossible with cvs are trivial now. The distributed repository
is a perfect match for open source projects.

i don't know enough about svn yet to determine if it somehow can be made
to support scenarios such as in
http://xaraya.com/~marcel/bkusecases/usecases.html
svn isn't distributed from what i understand, which takes the fun out of
scenarios.

i picked bk for the xaraya project 2 years ago, and it has been a big
success. i'm curious if we can get some of these benefits with svn too.

bitkeeper and others are not an option at the ASF. its either CVS or SVN
at the moment. from what i understand though, you can do extensive
aliasing to achieve many of the benefits of distributed repositories.

http://svnbook.red-bean.com/svnbook/ch07s03.html

for instance, we could define an alias for bxe and kupu (and other
non-ASF projects) to include them in one easy checkout yet still follow
ASF legal policy.

Hmmm, I would prefer a distributed repository scm similar to
bitkeeper. I'm using monotone (http://www.venge.net/monotone/) now
to track lenya and my specific branches.

Hoping you guys will pave the road for Cocoon's own switch, here's my +1.

Positive votes: 5 (Gregor, Roku, Gianugo, Michi, Andreas)
Negative votes: 1 (Christian)

This means we decided to switch to SVN.

Hehe, clever.

Jan just confirmed that subclipse does not (yet) work on Linux,
i.e. as a Linux user you will presently not be able to use Eclipse
with subversion (without going to the cmd line behind Eclipses
back). This is a blocker IMHO.

It is doable, if you know what you are doing.

I have my doubts about the readyness of the tool chain. And no, I'm
not willing to resort back to the command line on Linux.

* for subclipse there are contradicting rumours flying around. Haven't
had time to confirm that this really works on Linux. I belive it
  when I see it.

* there is psvn.el for emacs. Don't know if it is as tighly integrated
  into Emacs as pcl-cvs.

So until these issues are clarified I'm

forgot 2 things

<gregor> i just realized that it is easier for people behind a firewall
<gregor> because they can sync over http
<roku> Exactly
<roku> And it can be easily accessed via WebDAV from inside cocoon/lenya
