discrepency when rendering to JEditorPane

For identical requests, the html served to a JEditorPane browser
implementation and IE are different. Turbine probably checks the browser
type and does something. Nothing weird there. but...

The problem with the JEditorPane rendering though is I get "&gt" and "&lt"
(< and >) all over the page.

What's going on here?
How should I fix this?
