[jira] [Commented] (LEGAL-177) About using third-party software under GPL

    [ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LEGAL-177?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=13761096#comment-13761096 ]

Lawrence Rosen commented on LEGAL-177:
--------------------------------------

Does anyone here know what this actually means:

The code generated by JFlex inherits the copyright of the
specification it was produced from. If it was your specification,
you may use the generated code without restriction.

It is gibberish to me, and of no obvious legal effect.

If we ignore this nonsense preamble, this software seems to be just a GPL plug-in with no viral effect whatsoever on Apache code. If we actually distribute this plugin, we will have to include in our NOTICE file the exact notices required by the Maven JFlex Plugin license.

> Apache MRQL (incubating) is planning to release its first release soon and we want to check if the third-party software that we use has compatible licenses. Our current NOTICE file is included below. My question is about JFlex and maven-jflex-plugin. They both have Gnu GPL licenses which are not compatible with Apache License 2.0. But JFlex license indicates "The code generated by JFlex inherits the copyright of the specification it was produced from. If it was your specification, you may use the generated code without restriction." We simply use JFlex to generate code (scanners). Can we use this software in MRQL?
