Subversion for IBM i (OS/400)

Hi,

I am not a current subscriber to this mailing list and would appreciate being explicitly CC:ed in any responses.

I currently use Subversion for IBM i (OS/400) which runs on IBM i (OS/400) version V7R1. This was originally an open source project from SoftLanding Systems. Is Subversion no longer being maintained/developed for IBM i (OS/400) now that it is under Apache? The reason I ask is I don't see OS/400 listed in the Apache Subversion Binary Packages list (http://subversion.apache.org/packages.html). Thanks in advance for any information on this.

Thanks,
Steve

Alternatively, if you absolutely must use svn on OS/400, you might be able
to get by using svnkit (pure java re-implementation of svn), if you have a
java vm.

That is, if you're talking about an svn client. It's not clear from your
post whether you mean an svn client or server.

See svnkit.com.

I was curious, and the IBM i whitepaper says that they do provide
backwards compatibility, allegedly back to System/38.

I have never used AS/400, but I expected to be interesting because
pointers are 16 bytes long, and conversion between pointers and
integers is very limited. I wonder if they use the additional bits in
the pointer representation to achieve memory safety for C programs,
which would be a pretty unique feature.

Haven't personally used the IBM "iSeries 7" operating systems, for
which the link on that page is broken, or the new "iPower 8". And note
that "iPower 8" is an ad, there's no hint that it is also compatible
with old AS/400 hardware or old OS/400 software.

When vendors start getting squirrelly about operating system names and
compatibility, I take it as "time to start over from scratch with a
new OS".

This seems unrelated. I believe OS/400 is still supported by IBM
under its current name (whatever that is):

If possible for Subversion servers, I'd push to migrate. Finally digging
through the IBM support site, I see that support for it ended in 2007.

http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?subtype=ca&infotype=an&appname=iSource&supplier=897&letternum=ENUS906-023

For the clients, I think you're pretty much SOL with an EOL of the
operating system 7 years ago. The oldest Suvversion release still supported
is 1.7, and you're going to have a nightmare trying to establish the
necessary build chain on an operating system that old. Even I had a heck of
a time backporting 1.6 to RHEL 4 for RPMforge by the time RHEL 4 was
officially unsupported, and I can only imagine the nightmares somebody
skilled like Mark would go through backporting Subversion 1.7 to OS/400,
even if you could pay him to do it.

I was responsible for that port and stopped working on it in 2007 when I
left SoftLanding. So the last version ported was SVN 1.4. It was never
maintained as part of this project.

You should run your server on Linux.
