One other comment: have you tried using the Ant build.xml make system,
instead of the 'make/gmake' Makefile?  Use of the Makefiles is deprecated
and we suggest most users update to using the build.xml file with Ant (see
the two wrappers for this, xalan-j/build.bat or build.sh).
